Mornings. Darkness. Bleakness. Life can be daunting.

So it was for me when my four-year-old son Daniel died in February 1997. I wanted to die, too. And if my broken heart wasn't going to kill me, then at least, I wanted to stay in bed. But I was six months pregnant and had a six-year-old daughter and a 15-month-old son to care for. Mornings started early. When Elizabeth was born three months later, they seemed like the extension of countless sleep-deprived nights.

Perhaps you know what it's like to struggle. Maybe you have experienced a loss that keeps you from wanting to participate in life.

Getting Out of Bed in the Morning: Reflections of Comfort in Heartache addresses the toil of life, the heartache, the grief and loss. Known as a companion through grief, this little devotional was created to bring comfort to those in pain.

"I lie down and sleep; I wake again; because the Lord sustains me." ~ Psalm 3:5 (NIV)

I get out of bed by having my Zoe dog lick my face to tell me she needs to go outside.

Kara's Mom, thank you, for your comment. Nothing like a dog to get you going!

Dogs do get you moving, don't they?

I get out of bed because I hate being late to wherever I need to be...or for my daughter to be late to school.

The only button I could find to follow the blog was the email one on the left (Twitter was all I saw on the right), so I did that one. If I goofed, please let me know.

I Follow on GFC - I receive your eMails - I only get out of bed because, at this lowest point in my pain-filled life, I cannot sleep much from stress and I must continue to try to find employment, which has eluded me this past year no matter what or how hard I try... I'd be pleased to win your book and learn How to Get Out of Bed... Yes, I am a Christian, but am slowly losing Hope... trying not to give up...

Thanks for sharing what gets you up in the morning.

Lynden,

I know how hard it is to keep the faith when life continues to throw heartbreaking situations your way. Please know that you are valuable and loved and a precious treasure!

One of my best friends just lost her 4 month old baby girl. I know she (and I) could really use this book.

My kids are what get me out of bed in the morning! They have always been early riser and think that Mommy should be too (which I used to be before I had kids!)

So sorry to hear about your best friend's loss. I pray you can be a wonderful support to her.

A good cup of coffee is the first thing that gets me out of bed in the morning. Aside from that, I babysit my 2-year-old granddaughter several days a week, and she is my reason for getting up! Thank you for offering this contest, Alice!

Coffee works, especially if it is good!
